Meet our new Organist and Director of Music Ministry

Following fifteen months of an exhaustive and intensive search, St. Stanislaus Cathedral has successfully concluded this task by hiring Dr. Peter Picerno as its new Organist and Director of Music Ministry.

Peter PicernoDr. Picerno comes to St. Stanislaus with an extensive background in organ performance, teaching, many publication writings, as well as conducting. Dr. Picerno was awarded a Bachelor of Music degree in organ performance and music history from Oberlin College Conservatory Music. He received a Master of Music degree in organ performance at the University of Oregon. He was also awarded a Master of Music degree in musicology at the University of Kansas. He received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in organ performance, with honors, at the University of Kansas. He also obtained a Master of Library and Information Science
degree at Kent State University.

Among Dr. Picerno’s numerous awards and honors include; election to Phi Kappa Phi honor society, Phi Kappa Lamda honor society, as well as receiving a Fullbright-Hays Grant for study in Italy. Dr. Picerno has been very active in the American Guild of Organists, serving as Chairperson of the Professional Concerns Committee in the Kansas and Memphis Chapters, as well as the Dean of the Memphis, Miami and Fort Lauderdale Chapters.

His many and various teaching positions included those at the University of Oregon, the University of Kansas and St. Edward’s University-Scarborough in Austin, Texas.Dr. Picerno has given organ performances throughout the United States since 1991 and his Choral and Instrumental Performances as a conductor, include Schubert, Vivaldi, Bach, Handel and Pergolesi.

His publications, among others, have appeared in the Journal of Consumer Health on the Internet, Notes, Reformed Liturgy and Music, The American Organist, and The Triangle of Mu Phi Epsilon Dr. Picerno has begun his responsibilities at St. Stanislaus Cathedral and is looking forward to enhancing the sounds emanating from our magnificent Austin organ, which will be celebrating its 30th anniversary in September. A celebration of this anniversary is being planned for the fall, with performances by Dr. Picerno, Dr. Barbara Liberasky Nowicki, along with the Cathedral Chorale and other performers.

Dr. Nowicki will continue as the Choir Director, and in collaboration with Dr. Picerno will be working to escalate the Cathedral Chorale to new expectations, heights and exposure.
